An outstanding learning experience

The Faculty of Maths and Physical Sciences unites world experts in Chemistry, Colour Science, Food Science, Mathematics, Nanotechnology and Physics.

Together, the different Schools, Departments and Institutes that are the Faculty, offer a wide range of inspirational learning experiences from undergraduate degrees, Masters and PhDs, to professional development programmes, seminars, and conferences.

We aim to give our students the best possible career prospects. That's why a key principle of our teaching is that it is informed by research, to take students to the forefront of their chosen discipline. Core subject knowledge, is combined with the latest theories and investigations to expand the student's learning. It's also the reason for our focus on the development of transferable skills, from teamwork to communication, to enhance each student's employability.

Global experts, with a name for pioneering research

The Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences contains some of the UK's leading scientific research teams as evidenced in the outcome of the 2008 RAE (Research Assessment Exercise), conducted by HEFCE, where all Schools were judged to be undertaking ‘world-leading‘ or ‘internationally excellent’ research, helping to position the University of Leeds in the top ten UK institutions for research power, a measure of both the quality and volume of research carried out.

The Faculty has excellent industrial links. In many instances, it is the existence of collaborative interdisciplinary partnerships with the private sector that helps turn cutting-edge research into viable commercial concerns.
